How to become a student at the University of Veliko Tarnovo

A Step-by-Step Guide for International Students

Step 1

State your interest in studying at the University of Veliko Tarnovo at: foreign-students@ts.uni-vt.bg.

Step 2

You will receive an application form to be completed and submitted no later than 1 July to: foreign-students@ts.uni-vt.bg.

Step 3

You should send the documents listed below by post or bring them personally no later than 1 October:

Bachelor’s Degree:

  1. An application form containing biographical data, the program that the applicant would like to enrol in, the type of education, the length of studies and the degree of educational qualification. The applicant also states the level of Bulgarian language competence as well as other languages spoken;
  2. A certified translation of the diploma for secondary education (together with the enclosed list of grades) when the applicant would like to enrol for the full course of studies. The minimum average score of the diploma subjects, included in forming the university entrance score, should not be below 62 per 100 of the maximum value according to the grading system of the country where the applicant has completed his/her secondary education, i.e. the Good mark;
  3. A document issued by an authoritative body attesting the right of the candidate to continue his/her studies in higher education institutions of the country where the secondary education has been completed (if it is not explicitly stated in the diploma);
  4. A medical certificate issued one month before the application date, certified by the respective bodies in the applicant’s country; *
  5. Copy of ID document (passport or ID card) showing the applicant’s name written in Latin alphabet as well as his/her date of birth and place of birth. Applicants who have dual citizenship, one of which is Bulgarian, submit copies of both ID documents. When there is a difference in the spelling of the applicant’s name in the ID documents (Bulgarian and foreign), he/she submits a notarized declaration for the identity of names or a letter issued by municipal authority;
  6. Bulgarian language proficiency certificate – when the applicant wants to enrol in a program taught in Bulgarian language;
  7. Two passport size photographs.

* Please, note that the diploma, the medical certificate and all documents issued by bodies abroad should be translated into Bulgarian and certified in accordance with the provisions of the international agreements between the Republic of Bulgaria and the country where the documents have been issued. In cases when such provisions are not available, the general order for translation and legalization procedures, and procedures for certification of documents should be considered. The recognition of secondary education diplomas, issued by schools abroad, is carried out by the Regional Office of Education at the Ministry of Education and Science;

Master‘s Degree:

  1. An application form and a declaration containing biographical data, the program that the applicant would like to enrol in, the type of education, the length of studies and the degree of educational qualification.
  2. A certified translation of the diploma for completed degree of higher education (together with the enclosed list of grades and number of classes) and European diploma supplement (for the countries where such a supplement is issued) when the applicant would like to enrol in a higher degree of educational qualification (for example master after bachelor).
  3. A document issued by an authoritative body attesting the right of the candidate to continue his/her studies in higher education institutions of the country where the secondary education has been completed (if it is not explicitly stated in the diploma);
  4. A medical certificate issued one month before the application date, certified by the respective bodies in the applicant’s country; *

Step 4

The university sends the applicant’s documents to the Ministry of Education and Science in order to complete the procedure for issuing long-stay visas (Type D visa).

Type D visa is not required for citizens of the European Union and the European Economic Area, foreign citizens with permanent residence in the Republic of Bulgaria, and applicants with dual citizenship, one of which is Bulgarian.

Step 5

Upon the receipt of the applicant’s admission certificate issued by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science and the issuing of type “D” visa, the applicant should deposit the tuition fee into the university bank account and enrol in the respective program.

PROGRAMMES TAUGHT IN BULGARIAN

The University of Veliko Tarnovo offers Bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes taught in Bulgarian. Please, check the electronic catalogue of the degree programmes and select a programme of your choice. Knowledge of Bulgarian language is required for admission in the degree programmes listed in the catalogue.

BULGARIAN LANGUAGE STUDIES

The University of Veliko Tarnovo provides language studies and specialized training to foreign citizens who would like to study at Bulgarian universities. The curriculum is in accordance with the Bulgarian state requirements. The courses are organized by the Department for Language Teaching. Foreign citizens who speak Bulgarian language can sit for an exam without having attended language courses.
