The very first University of Veliko Tarnovo Bulgarian Philology graduates celebrated the 50 year anniversary of their graduation (class of 1967) on October 14 2017 at 11:00 in “Europe” hall.
The, now over 70s, alumni begin their studies with the University’s opening on September 15 1963 when on the historical hill of Sveta Gora in Veliko Tarnovo a centre for the Humanities, Sciences and Arts marks its beginning – the University of Veliko Tarnovo welcomes its first class. The university founders are their first lecturers – rector, prof. Aleksandar Burmov, and vice-rector, Prof Penyo Rusev – alongside them are other luminaries of the Humanities of the time – prof. Georgi Dimov, prof. Ivan Galabov, prof. Ivan Duridanov, prof. Stancho Vaklinov, prof. Hristo Danov, prof. Velizar Velkov, prof. Strashimir Dimitrov, prof. Nikola Kozhuharov, prof. Vasil Stoilov. They manage to quickly engage their students through their own love and dedication to the Humanities, and class of 1967 earns the title the elite. These students organise their first scholarly session in 1964 which laid the groundwork of many significant research centres in the University of Veliko Tarnovo such as the Tarnovo Literary School.
There were 120 Bulgarian Philology graduates in 1967. Throughout the years they have worked as teachers, school headmasters, heads of culture departments, in local and national media. There are scholars among them – 8 professors and associate professors, writers, poets, local historians. Some of them held an exhibition of their works before the meeting.
40 people were able to come to the celebrated anniversary. They were welcomed by prof. Dr. Hristo Bondzholov, University of Veliko Tarnovo rector.
Class of 1967 graduates offered flowers of gratitude to the monument at the patron saints of the University of Veliko Tarnovo the brother saints Cyril and Methodius, at the bas-relief of the founder and first rector of the University, prof. Aleksandar Burmov, as well as to the monument of him at the Walk of Fame in Veliko Tarnovo. The meeting concluded with a festive lunch.
