INTERNATIONAL BIENNALE OF CHURCH ARTS
The International Biennale is a project of the Department of Church Arts, Faculty of Orthodox Theology at the "St. Cyril and St. Methodius" University of Veliko Tarnovo. The first biennale in 2009 was under the motto "Church Arts in the Spiritual Culture of Contemporary Europe". Patron of the event is the Rector of the University of Veliko Tarnovo. The Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo is a dedicated co-organizer of the event, providing the "Rafael Mihaylov" Exhibition Halls for the show. Partners of the forum are: The Holy Metropolitan of Veliko Tarnovo, the Union of Bulgarian Artists, the Veliko Tarnovo Branch of the UBA, "P. R. Slaveykov" Regional Library, "Prof. D-r Totyu Koev" Orthodox Centre, "Diakonia and Mission" Foundation, Demax AD and others.
The biennale is a contemporary art forum in the field of Orthodox church arts: icon painting, mural painting, woodcarving, mosaics, etc., which contribute to church decoration and divine service. It includes an exhibition, presentations, discussions and other concurrent events. The forum is organized on regular basis every two years. It started as a national forum, but has already won recognition as an international event. By issuing a catalogue and including it in the National Reference List of Scientific Publications, the organizers hope to expand and upgrade the format. The status of the biennale requires that the texts in the catalogue are published in Bulgarian and in English.
The eligibility of works for participation in the exhibition and for publication in the catalogue is assessed by an international editorial board. The materials for publication shall be sent in electronic form to the email address of the editorial board: churchart.vtu@abv.bg
