ERASMUS POLICY STATEMENT

 

St.Cyril and St.Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo is established in 1963. It is spiritual successor to Turnovo Literary School f.1371 and the biggest University outside the capital with 7 faculties: Modern Languages, History and Law, Education, Fine Arts, Economics, Philosophy and Orthodox Theology. Situated in the old capital of Bulgaria, with rich history, culture and picturesque landscape, the University attracts over 10000 students.

The University joins the Lifelong Learning Program and shares its goals to promote the development of a knowledge-based society with sustainable economic development and:

 

-          to contribute to the development of quality lifelong learning and to encourage the best use of results and good practices that assure quality: it has a special Quality and Accreditation Department;

-          to reinforce the contribution of learning to personal fulfillment, development of creativity, competitiveness, and employability and to improve the attractiveness and accessibility of education, combating all forms of discrimination based o n sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion, disability or age: in its enrollment procedures.

-          to promote language learning and linguistic diversity: The Modern Languages Faculty is the largest, with over 15 languages, and 15 Language Resource Centres. The International language Centre promotes Bulgarian language and culture.

-          to support creating European citizenship based o n understanding and respect for human rights and democracy, cultural diversity and dialogue and the need to combat racism, prejudice and xenophobia. The University promotes the Bulgarian ethnic and religious model of communication providing for national security and peace o n the Balkans.

 

The University of Veliko Turnovo is committed to the priorities of Erasmus program and will:

-          support the achievement of a European Area of Higher Education: with more European partners and harmonization of study programs;

-          improve the quality and quantity of mobilities: starting with 8 students and 4 teachers in 1999/2000, in 2006-7 we have 62 students and 34 teachers.

-          improve the quality and quantity of cooperation with universities: starting with 5 Bilateral Agreements in 1999/2000, in 2006/7 they are 42.

-          increase the degree of transparency and compatibility between higher education qualifications: by using ECTS and European diploma supplement;

-          improve cooperation with enterprises: by developing the activities of the Career Resource centre;

-          facilitate the development of innovative practices and their transfer: by participating in joint projects;

-          support the development of innovative ICT-based content, services, pedagogies and practice

 

The University of Veliko Turnovo improves and develops its information services and gives wide visibility of its Erasmus activities EPS o n its internet site and o n special information sites. The University has restructured and optimized the work of its International relations department to meet the new requirements.

 

 

QUALITY OF ACADEMIC ACTIVITY

 

St.Cyril and St.Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo is committed to contribute to the development of quality lifelong learning, to improve the quality of mobility and to increase transparency and compatibility between higher education qualifications.

The University acquired an international quality certificate DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 in 2004 from DQS GmbH certifying organization and introduced a university system for quality management. The Evaluation and Accreditation National Agency granted  an institutional accreditation o n the basis of article 75, paragraph 1 of the Law for Higher Education and a Decision of the Accreditation Council from 29.06.2006, evaluated “Good”. The accreditation is valid for 6 years. 

The University has new studies plans, in compliance with state requirements for the education degrees Bachelor”, “Ìasterand “PhD”. It introduced the European system for accumulation and transfer of credits and European diploma supplement. Curricula information is easily accessible o n the site of the university.

Recognition of Erasmus mobility is granted and the students keep their full rights and obligations. Subjects are recognized always when their content corresponds to the content of the respective study program. Information and counseling of outgoing students is provided by an Erasmus administrative person and by the respective department coordinator. Together they draw the Learning Agreement and fill in application and housing forms.

Tutoring and information of incoming students is provided by an administrative person for incoming students. Accommodation services are available at students’ dormitory upon request. There are three students’ cafeterias, spots and library facilities.

Language courses are provided each semester for incoming students. Outgoing students may join facultative language courses at the university.

Staff mobility is supported administratively and partly financially by the university’s organization of mobility funds.
