DOCTORAL STUDIES
The Faculty of Modern Languages offers a number of research PhD programmes in a wide range of subjects from theoretical linguistics and the study of Bulgarian dialects to British, American, French and German studies. Students are expected to take a set number of exams but the main emphasis is o n research under the supervision of a highly qualified, fully tenured lecturer from the Faculty. PhD degrees are awarded o n successful completion of the programme of studies which also includes the writing and public defense of a dissertation. PhD programmes are taught o n a full- and part-time basis. The duration of a full-time PhD programme is 3 years. Part-time doctoral students are expected to complete their studies in 4 years.
At present 43 post-graduate students are studying for a PhD degree. Six of them are foreign nationals from Greece, Moldova and Ukraine.
